First, separate discovery from evaluation
You ask ChatGPT for a product in your category. It names three competitors and leaves you out. Before rewriting your homepage, save the conversation: the exact question, the answer, the date, any cited sources, and whether web search was enabled.
Now distinguish two questions. “What should I use to learn Spanish before a trip?” tests discovery. “Would you recommend this language app for my trip?” with your URL tests evaluation after the product has been introduced. Success on the second question does not explain why you were absent from the first.
Use fresh conversations and realistic constraints from customer conversations: budget, team size, required integrations, or intended outcome. Do not keep adding your brand to a discovery prompt until it appears. That changes the question you are measuring.
Four explanations to investigate
1. Your product did not enter the research
Inspect the sources and category language in the response. Then ask a separate, explicitly named-product question. If the assistant can assess your product when given its URL, investigate discovery separately from the quality of its evaluation. Absence from one answer is not proof that a crawler was blocked.
2. The assistant misunderstood the product
Compare its description with what a customer can actually buy. If it mistakes a one-off diagnostic for continuous monitoring, show the delivery format, frequency, and intended use on the relevant product page. Use a concrete example of the output.
3. It could not substantiate a deciding claim
Locate the exact uncertainty: total cost, supported regions, data handling, compatibility, or evidence for an outcome. Check whether the answer overlooked an existing source, encountered outdated information, or identified something genuinely missing.
4. The competitor meets a requirement you do not
If the buyer needs an integration you do not offer, a stronger headline will not resolve that. Explain the boundary accurately and test situations where your product does fit. Record product gaps separately from copy edits.
A real example: being found was not enough
In Agentzia’s September 3, 2026 Duolingo study, all eight unprompted discovery scenarios found the product. Among the eight decisions that named Duolingo, seven recommended a trial, while three selected it beyond a trial. Those are separate populations and outcomes; they are not a conversion funnel.
One ChatGPT research participant supported beginner practice and habit-building but questioned whether the exercises were sufficient for spontaneous conversation. The resulting page proposal was specific: organize learning-outcome evidence by language and skill so a learner can check whether a study applies to their goal.
That does not establish that Duolingo loses every speaking-related recommendation, or that changing the page would reverse the answer. It shows how to move from a recorded concern to a testable revision. The linked report contains the responses; these are representative research profiles, not a survey of everyone using the consumer apps.
Write a revision that answers the objection
Imagine a buyer asks for analytics with 90-day event retention. The assistant recommends a rival because it cannot establish your retention period. This is an illustrative situation, not an Agentzia customer result.
If your plan really includes 90 days, put that fact beside the plan, explain exceptions, and link the actual retention policy. Your acceptance check is whether a reader can identify the applicable plan and retention period without guessing. If your plan only includes 30 days, correct the positioning rather than inventing a capability.
Keep a short change record: the buying question, the original objection, the source that resolves it, the page and exact edit, and what you expect to see in a retest. This is more actionable than a task labelled “improve GEO.”
Check the reason as well as the recommendation
After the edited page is public and reachable, repeat the original questions with the same available configuration. Save every result, including failures and unchanged answers. Inspect whether the assistant encountered the updated source and whether the original concern remains.
Repeat observations before interpreting movement. An unchanged answer could reflect a real limitation, an old source, or ordinary variation. A changed answer alone does not prove that your edit caused it.
GEO work should leave you with a clearer explanation of the buying decision and a defensible next action. No page edit can guarantee a recommendation for every buyer.
